I very much wish I could say this is some 'How to Train Your Dragon' fanart...but it isn't. Not entirely. The Night Fury here is NOT Toothless (if you look at the tail you can tell), it is a new Night Fury OC I'm working on. Reason being...As much as I love Darkrai and his backstory (minus the whole 'dark magic' thing) I thought I'd try making a Night Fury partner for my HTTYD sona that isn't both A.) A hostile-on-sight jerk and B.) Possessing any kind of magic or backstory similar to another fan's story (Darkrai's sounded somewhat like Nightshade's in ways. Only that he was in the Dragon Fights. Though his was on Greece and those were canon to the books).
So this is Wolf Paw, named for one of the scales on his or her front paw (the one raised to the chest) which looked to his rider, like some kind of wolf paw print. Even if no one else saw it, the name stuck. The Night Fury is called 'Wolf' for short, causing even more reason for teasing or confusion from others and is normal among Vikings. To name someone or thing something odd. Right now I'm thinking of naming the HTTYD version of my OC something different, though Mega sounds good. Since her parents probably expected her to be just that. Mega, ultimate and unstoppable.
Anyway, this is probably how she and Wolf Paw met. Right here it looks like how Hiccup and Toothless met but actually Wolf Paw was caught in a dragon trap. Even with Drago gone, there were still others that were attempting to capture dragons, perhaps sell them and let their new masters decide what to do with them. Wolf Paw's rider happened to find him or her (I'm not sure what gender to make the dragon) and cut the dragon loose shortly before the trappers came to claim their prize.
Right now I'm also trying to figure out what the time-line is. If this takes place years after the second movie, with Hiccup as chief and married to Astrid like in the "Ireth and Vespera Fables" or while they're still teens...or even years after with the next generation in charge and such. I don't know...Thoughts?
I used both a base and a screenshot of Toothless to get the positioning right, the base proving more helpful as a reference since it didn't have any shading and the tail was in a good position.

Wolf Paw sounds like a interesting character. Even if you used a lineart to draw him/her, this is probably one of your best drawings of a Nightfury. Looks strongly accurate. I also love the scale-like texture you gave Wolf.
I'm working on a Nightfury character myself. I got her story and design ready, unlike my old HTTYD characters, this one will actually take place in the HTTYD universe instead of a made-up non-accurate place
